Rochester was the first European settlement in Oakland County when it was founded in 1818. It became part of the Avon Township in 1835 and incorporated as an autonomous city in 1967. It is mostly surrounded by the city of Rochester Hills and also borders Shelby Township to the east.
The township became Avon Charter Township in August 1978. Court challenges to the 1974 annexation continued until November 1981, when the township was ordered to surrender the annexed property. An impending annexation request from the City of Troy, due south, for 300 acres of southeast Avon Township brought the city hood question to a crisis. [14]

In 1818, Township Number 7 was organized and named "Xeuma", then later renamed "Troy Township". In 1824, Lorain County was created, and the name of Troy Township was changed to Avon Township. An Avon post office was established in 1825. The entire township was incorporated into a village in 1917, and became the City of Avon in 1961. [7]
