The Southern Amateur is an amateur golf tournament. It has been played since 1902 and is organized by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, it was played at match play. Since 1964, it has been played at stroke play. In December 2021, the Southern Amateur joined with six other tournaments to form the Elite Amateur Golf Series. [1]

The Southern Championships [1] also known as the Southern States Championships or Southern Sectional Championships was a men's and women's grass court then later clay tournament staged annually at various locations from 1885 until 1978. [2] The tournament is still being held today as the USTA Southern Championships. [3]
When the USTA Midwest proposed a national clay court championship in 1910, the USTA agreed without dissent. In the 1920s, tennis became very popular in America and they started to train junior players. Originally the tournament was held at West Side Tennis Club in Forrest Hills, New York from 1916 to 1920 and then again in 1927.
