The school was established in 1943 during World War II as Hornchurch County High School, and opened with 75 boys and girls and a staff of 4 teachers on Cedar Avenue in Upminster (now the site of Branfil Primary School). By 1952 there were 294 students and it was clear that larger premises were needed.
Emerson Park is a suburban neighbourhood in the London Borough of Havering, east London. The neighbourhood developed as two large housing estates built on the 550 acres (2.2 km 2) estate of Nelmes manor in the parish of Hornchurch. Hornchurch was a local government district in southwest Essex from 1926 to 1965, formed as an urban district for the civil parish of Hornchurch. It was greatly expanded in 1934 with the addition of Cranham, Great Warley, Rainham, Upminster and Wennington; and in 1936 by gaining North Ockendon.

The easternmost seat in Greater London, it includes the suburbs of Cranham, Emerson Park, Harold Wood, Hornchurch, Upminster and part of Elm Park. The constituency includes the semi-rural Noak Hill and North Ockendon and the large Harold Hill estate, built by the London County Council and completed in 1958.
The house and gardens became local authority property in 1929 and are currently used as the borough register office and a public park. Langtons House was used as the council offices of Hornchurch Urban District Council from 1929 to 1965.
