Recreation Day is a public holiday in northern Tasmania. It is held on the first Monday in November, and was instituted to compensate northern Tasmanians in place of Regatta Day, which is celebrated in southern Tasmania. It is observed in all parts of Tasmania north of (but not including) Oatlands and Swansea.

In 1899, the government legislated that the day be a public holiday through the Labour Day Act of 1899. The day was set as the second Wednesday in October and first celebrated the following year, in 1900. In 1910, the holiday was moved to the fourth Monday in October. [28]

The Royal Hobart Regatta is a series of aquatic competitions and displays held annually in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia and is Tasmania's oldest sporting event. The regatta began in 1838. [1] [2] The event runs for three days and incorporates a public holiday observed in Southern Tasmania on the second Monday in February. [3]
