In 1606 the prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau built a palace for his mistress, Salome Alt and their children outside the Bergstraßtor gate of Salzburg. Raitenau was born at Hofen Castle in Lochau, [2] near Bregenz in Further Austria, the son of the Habsburg colonel Hans Werner von Raitenau (1525-1593) and Helene von Hohenems (1535-1586), a niece of Pope Pius IV and sister of Mark Sittich von Hohenems Altemps, who was consecrated Bishop of Constance in 1561, as well as sister-in-law of Cardinal Charles Borromeo.
Wolf Dietrich hired the Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi to prepare a plan for a comprehensive new Baroque building. Construction did not begin however until Wolf Dietrich's successor, Markus Sittich von Hohenems (Archbishop from 1612 to 1619), in 1614 laid the cornerstone of the new cathedral.
