As of the 2022-2023 and the 2023-2024 school years, there are 555 high school football teams competing in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's (PIAA) 12 Districts. Each district is divided into numerous leagues and conferences.
The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) was founded in 1907 by a group of educators from four public and private Pittsburgh schools who sought increased regulation and governance of student athletic eligibility and interscholastic athletic competition.
The district is one of the 500 public school districts of Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center, 22.4% of the district's pupils lived at 185% or below the Federal Poverty Level [3] as shown by their eligibility for the federal free or reduced price school meal programs in 2012.
