The Nesher was followed by the IAI Kfir ("lion cub"), which was developed as a result of Israel's need for adapting the Dassault Mirage III to the specific requirements of the Israeli Air Force. The Kfir entered service with the IAF in 1975, the first units being assigned to the 101st "First Fighter" Squadron .

The arrival of 50 Mirage 5 jets was stopped due to an embargo imposed by the French government on arms trade with Israel in 1967. This accelerated the development of the Nesher jet by IAI, to fulfill the operational needs of the IAF. In the Yom Kippur War 1973 the squadron shot down 44 enemy planes, with no own losses and no casualties.
Since the J79 turbojet engine is an U.S. design, although manufactured under license in Israel, all export sales of the Kfir are subject to prior approval being granted by the U.S. State Department, a fact that has limited the sale of the Kfir to foreign nations. As of 2006, the IAI Kfir has been exported to Colombia, Ecuador, and Sri Lanka.
The vulture represents the name of the city and the cement factory from its inception. The 4 hills represent the mountainous terrain and the four original neighborhoods that constituted the settlement–Ben Dor, Tel Hanan, Nesher, and Givat Nesher. The factory and chimney represent the industrial foundation the city was established upon.
The squadron took over the Eagle planes (IAI Nesher) that were produced by the aerospace industry and were used for interception and bombing. The operation of these planes was considered top secret due to the embargo imposed by France after the Six Day War.
