BattleTech shares a setting with the original board game, now called Classic BattleTech.The game takes place during the 3025 Succession Wars Era, in which powerful noble houses employ an ever-shrinking number of giant fighting vehicles called battlemechs ('mechs for short), piloted by individuals called MechWarriors, to fight for control of the Inner Sphere.
With the demise of FASA Corporation in 2001, publishing of the original BattleTech novel series came to an end. When WizKids acquired the rights to the future of the BattleTech Franchise (re-christened as MechWarrior), they approached several of the established BattleTech authors including Randall N. MechCommander 2 features 29 mechs each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Generally, the lighter Mechs scout while the heavier mechs fight. Depending on which side the mercenary Mechcommander works for, different mechs would be available for purchase and salvage after combat missions.

The rear torso on mechs, and rear panel on tanks, contains the asset's engine - severe damage to these will reduce their top speed. Mechs can be mobility-killed by destroying one leg, or by severely damaging both legs. Destruction of the center torso for mechs, internals for tanks and hovercraft, or body for aircraft will destroy the asset.
