Its southern terminus is at an intersection with US 90/US 98 in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Its northern terminus is at an interchange with Interstate 75 (I-75) south of Mackinaw City, Michigan.

In 2014 the segment of US 31 freeway from US 30 near Plymouth to US 20 (St. Joseph Valley Parkway) in South Bend opened, and the segment of what had been US 31 in St. Joseph County outside of South Bend became SR 931.
