The Main North Line, sometimes referred to as part of the South Island Main Trunk railway, is a railway line that runs north from Christchurch in New Zealand up the east coast of the South Island through Kaikōura and Blenheim to Picton.
The first section of the Main North line opened in 1857 from the port of Newcastle to East Maitland as the Hunter River Railway Company's line. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] At a public meeting for the company's establishment in 1853, William Charles Wentworth envisioned the line's extension to Scone up north and Sydney down south. [ 4 ]
Construction of the 348 kilometres (216 mi) [4] Main North Line was one of the longest construction projects in New Zealand's history. [5] Through the 1870s, work on a line from Christchurch to northern centres in Canterbury was undertaken, with a line through Kaiapoi, Rangiora, and Amberley reaching Waipara in 1880, and at the other end, a line linking Blenheim and Picton opened in 1875.

The North Coast railway line was built between 1905 and 1932, and when completed, bypassed the Main North line and provided a quicker route up the eastern seaboard. The first part of the North Coast line was built between Casino and Grafton in 1905, as an extension of a line from Murwillumbah.
