The VMI–Virginia Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry [1] between the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute and the Hokies of Virginia Tech (formerly known as the Virginia Polytechnic Institute "Fighting Gobblers"). The teams first played in 1894 and last played in 1984.
The original "Military Classic of the South" was a football game played on Thanksgiving Day between Virginia Tech (VPI) and the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) beginning in 1913 and lasting until 1985. [2] [3] Unfortunately, as Virginia Tech continued to expand its student body, the game quickly became unmatched and VMI left the series in 1985.
At 79 games, it is the second-longest series for the Hokies and fourth-longest for the Keydets. Due to the long pause of the VMI-VPI series, the Virginia–Virginia Tech rivalry has emerged as the dominant one in the state. However, in 2017, Virginia Tech and VMI agreed to a one-time rivalry matchup on September 5, 2026 at Lane Stadium.
Virginia Tech led 14–7 at the half, but Virginia came out in the second half firing on all cylinders, and outscored Tech 21–0 by the 14 minute mark in the fourth quarter. Up by seven with only a few minutes left, Virginia pulled off a fake field goal on fourth down to keep possession away from the Hokies.
VMI had been tied twice during the year and entered the game with a 3-0-2 record. The Gobblers were 4-0 and had defeated third-place West Virginia, so only the two old rivals could end the season with an undefeated league mark. With the score tied 14-14 early in the third period, VMI drove 68 yards to inches of the Tech end zone.
Vanderbilt staved off a Virginia Tech comeback to start the season with an upset win. The Commodores came out on top in the first overtime of the college football season to defeat the Hokies 34-27
