St. Marks River State Park which opened in 2007, is the 161st Florida State Park, located about 10 miles east of Tallahassee, south of U.S. Highway 27. The park's 2,589 acres occupy parts of Jefferson and Leon counties and act as a buffer from development for the St. Marks River .

The peninsula was cut through by Hurricane Michael October 10, 2018 leaving the northern part of St. Joseph Peninsula State Park on an island. The breach partially filled in naturally by March 2019. The state has also brought in sand to restore dunes. As of 2020, the state plans to rebuild the access road to the northern part of the park. [7] [8]
