On 17 August 1920, the group of houses known as "Estación de Young" was declared a "Pueblo" (village) by the Act of Ley Nº 7.256. Río Negro Department (Spanish: Departamento de Río Negro, Spanish pronunciation: [ˈri.o ˈneɣɾo]) is a department of the northwestern region of Uruguay. It has an area of 9,282 km 2 (3,584 sq mi) and a population of 54,765.
The river is dammed near Paso de los Toros, creating the Rincón del Bonete Reservoir, also called the Gabriel Terra Reservoir or the Rio Negro Reservoir. With a surface area of about 1,100 square kilometres (420 sq mi), it is the largest reservoir in Uruguay and has an installed capacity of 160 MW.
