Vermillion (Lakota: Waséoyuze; [6] "The Place Where Vermilion is Obtained") is a city and the county seat of Clay County. [7] It is in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, United States, and is the state's 12th-most populous city.
Clay County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,967. [1] The county seat is Vermillion, [2] which is also home to the University of South Dakota.
The terrain of Lake County consists of rolling hills, with the area devoted to agriculture. A tributary of the East Fork Vermillion River flows south-southeastward through the lower western part of the county, and Buffalo Creek flows southeastward from the central part of the county, leaving the county near its southeast corner. [4]
