United States service medals of the world wars are U.S. military medals which were created solely for recognizing service in the First World War and World War II.Such medals are no longer awarded, but are still referred to in various publications, manuals, and award precedence charts as many veterans still display them as part of veteran functions and ceremonies.

The Victory Medal was originally intended to be established by an act of Congress. The bill authorizing the medal never passed, however, thus leaving the military departments to establish it through general orders. The War Department published orders in April 1919, and the Navy in June of the same year. [1]
Due to the nature of this medal, it is commonly presented posthumously.
