The Rapid City Historic Commercial District, sometimes called the Rapid City Downtown Historic District, is a 21-acre (8.5 ha), multi-block historic district in downtown Rapid City, South Dakota, United States. It includes 47 commercial buildings dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries that formed the core of Rapid City's early economy.
In Rapid City, a truck bypass runs along Catron Boulevard and Elk Vale Road up to exit 61 on I-90. The South Dakota section of US 16 is defined at South Dakota Codified Laws § 31-4-138. [ 3 ]
The nearly 104-year-old building, which officials say had recently been renovated, is in the busy downtown area near the Fort Worth Convention Center and City Hall.
I-90 was constructed in the 1970s. The four-lane Interstate replaced old US 16 as the main road connecting Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Much of Old US 16 remains intact; however, I-90 has absorbed sections and likewise has reshaped the economies of many southern South Dakota towns. [4]
