Gold Head Branch State Park, a Florida State Park, is just shy of 2400 acres (8 km²) of rolling sandhills, marshes, ravines, lakes and scrub located midway between Gainesville and Jacksonville, six miles (10 km) north of Keystone Heights on SR 21. Gold Head is one of the earliest state parks in Florida.
The most prominent feature of the state park is the large sinkhole formed by the dissolution of limestone by acidic groundwater over long periods of time. [1] Devil's Millhopper is unique in Florida in terms of its scale; over 100 feet (30 m) of rock layers are exposed.
The plains bison were reintroduced to the park from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in 1975, as part of the park service goal of restoring Florida's natural resources to pre-European settler conditions; they roamed this area until the late 18th century. [14] When bison sightings occur, they usually appear along the Cone's Dike trail.

Gainesville residents Thomas Hawkins and Davis Rembert started a fundraising effort, garnering over $2 million from private and government funds.
