Seven commercial buildings built from 1845 to 1887 in Italianate and Romanesque Revival styles. Simeon Mills built a log store and saloon in this area in 1837 - the first store in Madison. That log store is gone, but the structure at 121-123 E. Main still probably contains framing from 1847 - the oldest in Madison. 119: Hiram Smith Hall and Annex
The Simeon Mills House is an Italianate-style farmhouse-mansion built in 1863 on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin for Mills, an early settler, businessman and prominent civic leader. In 1987 this, his country house, was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
The interior mall atrium area was renovated into offices. A chunk on the south end was demolished to make way for a new parking lot, forcing a move by Yue Wah Oriental Foods, a store at the far end of the mall. The street grid within the isthmus is laid out in a southwest-to-northeast pattern. Three main arterial roads connect east and west Madison along the Isthmus: U.S. Highway 151 (US 151, East Washington Avenue), East Johnson Street, and East Gorham Street. The Williamson (Willy) Street business district is also located completely on the isthmus.
