The anime is the second animated series based on Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa video game franchise, and serves as a conclusion to the "Hope's Peak Academy" [b] arc established in the previously released games Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. The series is divided into three parts.
Following the events of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Makoto Naegi, the Ultimate Hope, and his fellow former classmates, detective Kyoko Kirigiri, swimmer Aoi Asahina, and fortune-teller Yasuhiro Hagakure, are brought together to an abandoned overseas branch of Hope's Peak Academy where the top members of the Future Foundation are assembled.
The series concludes the "Hope's Peak Academy" storyline and is split into two parts; Future Side which takes place after Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Despair Side, which takes place prior to the events of Trigger Happy Havoc. Seiji Kishi once again directed the series at Lerche, while Norimitsu Kaihō wrote the screenplay. [15]
[47] [48] The anime End of Hope's Peak Academy introduces a rival to Makoto named Kyosuke Munakata who shares similar ideals but is corrupted due to his friends' death, and thus contradicts Makoto's ideals. Across the story, Makoto carries the "burdens of hope" in the face of persistent obstacles, allowing him to redeem Kyosuke. [49]
Danganronpa takes place at an elite high school named Hope's Peak Academy (希望ヶ峰学園, Kibōgamine Gakuen), which accepts talented "Ultimate" students (超高校級, chō-kōkō-kyū, lit. Super High School Level) of the highest caliber in various fields each year. [2]
The game begins with Komaru Naegi, who has been invited to a test program hosted by the prestigious Hope's Peak Academy high school for soon-to-be graduates, as well as preschoolers of the Hope's Peak Elementary, some students from the school's reserve course, and certain family members of the students, the last of which applying to Komaru.
