The Golden Driller is a 76-foot-tall (23 m), 43,500-pound (19,700 kg) [1] statue in Tulsa, Oklahoma, depicting an oil worker. The structure is a steel frame covered with concrete and plaster. [ 2 ] It is the seventh-tallest statue in the United States and has been located in front of the Tulsa Expo Center since 1966.
The statue was originally proposed to be built at Holmes Peak in southeastern Osage County, located about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of downtown Tulsa and the highest point in the immediate region with an altitude of 1030 ft (314 m). The site was adjacent to the grounds of Tulsa's Centennial Botanical Garden (now called the Tulsa Botanic Garden).
The boulevard had been paved and the Irving monument was dedicated on April 30. An advertisement in the Tulsa World on July 4 announced that, “Lots are going fast in Tulsa’s most beautiful residence suburb—Irving Place and Park Hill.” The oil boom that had made many wealthy also provided abundant jobs for a burgeoning middle class.
