A flare or decoy flare is an aerial infrared countermeasure used by an aircraft to counter an infrared homing ("heat-seeking") surface-to-air missile or air-to-air missile. Flares are commonly composed of a pyrotechnic composition based on magnesium or another hot-burning metal, with burning temperature equal to or hotter than engine exhaust.
Acoustic sources within the "jet pipe" also contribute to the noise, mainly at lower speeds, which include combustion noise, and sounds produced by interactions of a turbulent stream with fans, compressors, and turbine systems. [1] The jet mixing sound is created by the turbulent mixing of a jet with the ambient fluid, in most cases, air.
After processing the nature of the threat, the system gives the pilot an audio and visual warning, and indicates the direction of the incoming threat. It also sends a signal to the aircraft's infrared countermeasures system, which can then for example deploy flares. [4] [5]
The pictures demonstrate the amazing visual effects that occur as military aircraft punch through the sound barrier and travel faster than sound itself. 11 photos of America's fighter jets ...
The ALE-47 is integrated with the aircraft's radar warning receivers, missile warning receivers and other electronic warfare sensors. When the aircraft's sensors detect a threat, the countermeasure dispenser system automatically launches radiofrequency and infrared countermeasures at the optimum time to defeat incoming missiles.
One of the declassified videos shows a People's Liberation Army (PLA) plane releasing eight flares 900 feet away from a US plane in the East China Sea in July this year, the Department of Defence ...
A Russian fighter jet flew within a few meters of a U.S. drone over Syria and fired flares at it, striking the American aircraft and damaging it, the U.S. military said Tuesday, the latest in a ...
A flare, also sometimes called a fusée, fusee, or bengala, [1] [2] bengalo [3] in several European countries, is a type of pyrotechnic that produces a bright light or intense heat without an explosion. Flares are used for distress signaling, illumination, or defensive countermeasures in civilian and military applications. Flares may be ground ...
