Route 201 was commissioned in 1934 from an unsigned state road (old SR 663) between Route 165 and Route 138 in Griswold. As part of the 1962 Route Reclassification Act, Route 201 was extended south to Route 2 and north to Jewett City (at Route 12).

U.S. Route 1 (US 1) in the U.S. state of Connecticut is a major east–west U.S. Route along Long Island Sound.It has been replaced by Interstate 95 (I-95) as a through route, which it closely parallels, and now primarily serves as a local business route.
By the beginning of the 20th century, the state took over maintenance of most of the major through routes. In 1922, Connecticut began marking its state highways with numbers. By this time, the village of Stratfield had been absorbed into the city of Bridgeport while Easton had become a separate town (since 1845).
