She was renamed HMS Erebus in 1904, HMS Fisgard II in 1906 and sank in a storm in 1914. HMS Erebus (I02) was an Erebus-class monitor launched in 1916 and broken up in 1947.
The ship sailed to the South China Sea and participated in the First Opium War. The war ended with the Treaty of Nanking , signed on board the Cornwallis in 1842. When Hoar returned to England he was rated as able seaman aboard HMS St. Vincent , which at the time was a depot vessel in Portsmouth Harbour . [ 1 ]
On 8 September 2014, it was announced that the wreckage of one of Franklin's ships was found on 7 September using a remotely operated underwater vehicle recently acquired by Parks Canada. [15] [16] On 1 October 2014, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that the remains were that of Erebus. [17]
Erebus was equipped with two 15 in (381 mm)/42 guns in a single forward turret mounted on a tall barbette to extend the range of fire to 40,000 yd (22.7 mi; 36.6 km). The Erebus class were designed to outrange German heavy shore batteries and they were also fitted with highly effective anti-torpedo bulges on each side of the hull.
The bay was one of a series of landmarks along the waters explored by John Franklin during his lost expedition between 1845 and 1848. [3] The bay has the same name as HMS Terror, one of the two ships of the expedition. [4]
