Germany Valley lies west of North Fork Mountain. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 698 square miles (1,810 km 2), of which 696 square miles (1,800 km 2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km 2) (0.3%) is water. [12] It is the fifth-largest county in West Virginia by area.
North Fork Mountain is a quartzite-capped mountain ridge in the Ridge and Valley physiographic province of the Allegheny Mountains, also known as the High Alleghenies or Potomac Highlands, of eastern West Virginia. [2] Kile Knob, at 4,588 feet (1,398 m), is the mountain's highest point, [1] and Panther Knob and Pike Knob are nearly as high.
White-nose syndrome had been reported in Hamilton Cave, West Virginia the prior year and the 2010 survey found evidence of white-nose syndrome in Hellhole as well, primarily affecting the little brown bats. 66,789 bats were counted in the survey, a decline of 40% in total bat numbers from 2007.
