Sir John Franklin’s doomed expedition to the Arctic captivated the Victorian public with its mysterious disappearance, fruitless rescue missions and gory tales of cannibalism.
In 1881, he was appointed to command the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, a 25-man expedition organized to carry out Arctic explorations. The expedition ran short of food and several resupply and rescue missions were unsuccessful, and by the time Greely and his men were rescued in 1884, there were only six survivors.

Sir James Clark Ross DCL FRS FLS FRAS (15 April 1800 – 3 April 1862) was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer of both the northern and southern polar regions. In the Arctic, he participated in two expeditions led by his uncle, John Ross, and in four led by William Edward Parry: in the Antarctic, he led his his own expedition from 1839 to 1843.
In 1850/51, with the financial support of Lady Franklin, he returned in a more official capacity, searching in the Jones Sound and Wellington Channel and beyond Cape Walker. He was in charge of two brigs: HMS Lady Franklin and HMS Sophia. On this trip he joined forces with Captain Horatio Thomas Austin at Beechey Island. [4]
