The Maori River is a river of the West Coast Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows from several sources in the Mataketake Range east of Haast , passing through the small Tawharekiri Lakes before becoming a tributary of the Waita River , which flows into the Tasman Sea 15 kilometres north of Haast.

The river was first known by its Māori name of Te Awa Whakatipu, with te awa literally translating as 'the river'. [7] The name Whakatipu is shared with several nearby geographic features, including Lake Wakatipu [a] and Whakatipu Kā Tuka (the Hollyford River) though this name is an archaic term and its original meaning is no longer known.
