The Juilliard School (/ ˈ dʒ uː l i. ɑːr d / JOO-lee-ard) [4] is a private performing arts conservatory in New York City.Founded by Frank Damrosch as the Institute of Musical Art in 1905, the school later added dance and drama programs and became the Juilliard School, named after its principal benefactor Augustus D. Juilliard.
The Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program is a one-year graduate level program in Juilliard's drama division. Selected playwrights invited to complete a second year may earn an Artist Diploma in Playwriting. [62]
In 1920, the Juilliard Foundation was created. In 1924, the Foundation's funds were used by its Trustees to establish the Juilliard Graduate School to assist excelling students with an advanced music education. In 1926, the school was merged with the New York Institute of Musical Art.
In 1926, the Institute of Musical Art merged with the Juilliard Graduate School to form what is today Juilliard School. Damrosch's pupils included William Howland, long-time head of the music department at the University of Michigan, [5] and the prodigy pianist Hazel Scott. [6] Damrosch died in New York City on October 22, 1937, aged 78. [7]
Irwin Freundlich (1908–1977) was a prominent teacher at Juilliard starting in 1935. He studied with James Friskin and Edward Steuermann at the Institute of Musical Art, which merged with the Juilliard Graduate School in 1926 to become the current Juilliard School of Music.
Lipton won a scholarship to the graduate school of the Juilliard School in November 1937. [12] There she studied singing with tenor Paul Reimers. In parallel, she participated in masterclasses of such prestigious artists as Sir Thomas Allen, Alfred Brendel, Emma Kirkby, Ileana Cotrubaş, Thomas Quasthoff, François le Roux, Malcolm Martineau and Christian Ivaldi.
