A native of Rhode Island, Joshua Appleby served as keeper of the Sand Key Light in the Florida Keys. Hurricanes in 1841 and 1842 caused considerable damage to the key, destroying Appleby's house and undermining the foundation of the light. The government repaired the damage and built a seawall, in hopes of adding further protection.
She was based out of Key West, Florida. Her assignment included tending aids to navigation, law enforcement and search and rescue. On 2 February 1954, she assisted the F/V Elliot near Key West. On 4 March 1954, she towed the disabled F/V Vkelpie to Key West. In the mid-1960s her designation was changed to WLM-540.
The Florida Keys Council for the Arts is the primary cultural umbrella for the Florida Keys, and serves the population from Key Largo to Key West. A non-profit local arts agency, it makes grants, operates the Monroe County Art in Public Places program, sponsors seminars, and manages the on-line cultural calendar for the region.
