The crest of the pass is wide and covered with lush alpine grass vegetation during the summer. The Astore River originates from the western slopes of the Burzil Pass. It is situated on the bank of the Burzil Nala, approximately 36 kilometres (22 mi) south of the Chilam Chowki checkpost and to the north of a border village named Kamri. The pass is named after the "Piz Umbrail", a nearby mountain peak. The road has been entirely asphalted since 2015. The last unpaved section was a 1.5 km stretch on the Swiss side, running between elevations of 1883 m and 2012 m. During the 2017 Giro d'Italia, Umbrail Pass was reached during the stage from Rovetta to Bormio.
