In 1840, St. Croix County covered a large portion of northwest Wisconsin Territory. In 1853, the Wisconsin State Legislature split St. Croix County into Pierce, Polk , and Saint Croix counties. Pierce County was named for Franklin Pierce , the fourteenth president of the United States .

WIS 65 begins at the corner of West Main Street (US Highway 10, US 10) and North Maple Street in downtown Ellsworth in Pierce County.WIS 65 heads north on Maple Street out of town, splitting off with County Trunk Highway J (CTH-J) north of the Ellsworth Country Club golf course.
US 10 enters the state and Pierce County from Minnesota at Prescott and immediately joins with Wisconsin Highway 35 (WIS 35) north. WIS 35 turns north one mile (1.6 km) northeast at WIS 29 while US 10 continues east and passes through Ellsworth at the junctions with WIS 65 and US 63.
