This template accepts IPv4 or IPv6 addresses as input and displays minimum-sized blocks of addresses that cover all of the inputs. The result uses CIDR notation and can be used by an administrator to block a range of IP addresses. The template can be used by editing any page, inserting the template, and previewing the result.
The template now uses Special:Contributions to display IP and IP range contributions, by default. That is possible due to work by MusikAnimal per an announcement at WP:AN. The previous version displayed contributions in the last month by default, and accepted |months=2 for the last 2 months, etc.
This template is used in MediaWiki:Blockiptext. Changes to it can cause immediate changes to the Wikipedia user interface. To avoid major disruption, any changes should be tested in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage .
Some large / 8 blocks of IPv4 addresses, the former Class A network blocks, are assigned in whole to single organizations or related groups of organizations, either by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), through the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), or a regional Internet registry.
In support of link-local multicasts which do not use IGMP, any IPv4 multicast address that falls within the *.0.0.0 / 24 and *.128.0.0 / 24 ranges will be broadcast to all ports on many Ethernet switches, even if IGMP snooping is enabled, so addresses within these ranges should be avoided on Ethernet networks where the functionality of IGMP ...

Shorter CIDR prefixes match more addresses, while longer prefixes match fewer. In the case of overlaid CIDR blocks, an address can match multiple CIDR prefixes of different lengths. CIDR is also used for IPv6 addresses and the syntax semantic is identical. The prefix length can range from 0 to 128, due to the larger number of bits in the address.
