The 2021 Haiti earthquake was the largest to strike the country since the 1842 Cap-Haïtien earthquake. More than 138,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, most of them in Les Cayes and Nippes. 2,248 people were killed, 12,763 others were injured and 329 people remained missing. The following is a list of significant earthquakes from 2021–2030, listing earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above, or which caused human fatalities. Deaths due to earthquake-caused tsunamis are included.
The earthquake occurred as a result of oblique-reverse faulting on an 80 km (50 mi) section of the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden fault zone, [20] 125 km (78 mi; 67 nmi) west of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, consistent with its location and the observed focal mechanism. It had an estimated hypocentral depth of 10.0 km (6.2 mi). [1]
On August 12, 2021, at 01:46:12 PST, a strong M w 7.1 earthquake struck the island of Mindanao at a depth of 55.1 kilometers (34.2 mi). It had a maximum perceived Intensity V on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale. [1] No damage or injuries were reported but a young man was killed by the earthquake.
Nearly 75% of the country is at risk for a potentially damaging earthquake in the next 100 years, according to a recently updated map from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake ruptured an area of about 120 mi × 60 mi (193 km × 97 km), equal to about 7,200 sq mi (19,000 km 2). The estimated maximum slip along this fault surface was about 3 to 4 m (9.8 to 13.1 ft). [30] The earthquake appears to have only partially ruptured the Shumagin segment of the subduction zone, at 75%.
The 2021 South Sandwich Islands earthquakes were a pair of powerful earthquakes, followed by many strong aftershocks which struck along the South Sandwich Trench in August 2021. The quakes measured 7.5 and 8.1 on the moment magnitude scale , according to the United States Geological Survey .
