Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit (the peppercorn), which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The fruit is a drupe (stonefruit) which is about 5 mm (0.20 in) in diameter (fresh and fully mature), dark red, and contains a stone which encloses a single pepper seed.
Ceylon cinnamon is the costlier variety and is considered to be a much more upmarket product by those in the West. Sri Lanka exported USD 128 million worth of cinnamon in 2014, which accounted for 28% of global cinnamon exports for that year. [17] Black pepper is the second largest export spice in Sri Lanka. P. K. Venugopalan Nambiar (1924–1996) was an Indian agricultural scientist credited with the development of the first hybrid variety of black pepper in the world, Panniyur-1. As the Head of Pepper Research Station, Panniyur in Kerala , he developed and released Panniyur-1 for commercial cultivation in 1971.
In 1955, the district replaced the province as the country's main administrative unit. [17] The Ampara District was created in April 1961, [ 18 ] [ 19 ] followed by the creation of the Mullaitivu and Gampaha districts in September 1978 [ 20 ] through a new constitution , which also reintroduced the provinces as the main administrative units.
