Bay laurel leaves (Laurus nobilis) Indian bay leaf Cinnamomum tamala Indonesian bay leaf Syzygium polyanthum The bay leaf is an aromatic leaf commonly used as a herb in cooking. It can be used whole, either dried or fresh, in which case it is removed from the dish before consumption, or less commonly used in ground form.
The bay laurel is dioecious , with male and female flowers on separate plants. [8] Each flower is pale yellow-green, about 1 cm (3 ⁄ 8 in) diameter, and they are borne in pairs beside a leaf. The leaves are glabrous, 6–12 cm (2–5 in) long and 2–4 cm (3 ⁄ 4 – 1 + 5 ⁄ 8 in) broad, with an entire (untoothed) margin.
The leaves are green, and lighter on the underside. [8] The bark and leaves have a pungent scent resembling camphor when bruised, [8] due to a chemical known as umbellulone. [6] The leaves are entire and lance-shaped about 3–10 centimetres (1.2–3.9 in) long. They may substitute for the Mediterranean bay leaf in cooking.

They mainly consist of aromatic fruits and seed products, although Australian wild peppers also have spicy leaves. There are also a few aromatic leaves but unlike culinary herbs from other cultures which often come from small soft-stemmed forbs , the Australian herb species are generally trees from rainforests, open forests and woodlands.

Many common plants in Dominica are used in these teas. Tea from the Common Guava leaf is used for diarrhea, and tea from the orange leaf is taken to stop vomiting. Caribbean Albizia bark (Albizia niopoides) gives a tea that soothes scorpion stings. Other bush teas are used to treat vitamin deficiencies, digestive ailments, or parasitic infections.
