While the first St. Francis de Sales [2] church was built in the Romanesque style in 1848, The current building was built as the parish Church of St. Francis de Sales in 1938 as the original structure was damaged by a Hurricane in the 1920s. The current building was made possible by the generosity of the Rev. August Vandebilt.

In response to these issues Archbishop Francis Janssens created two new parishes to serve the area. One was St. Francis of Assisi on November 6, 1890 and the other being the Most Holy Name in 1891. Early newspapers state that the parish was named in honor of the patron saint of the archbishop, St. Francis of Assisi, though other theories exist.
