Édouard Manet (UK: / ˈ m æ n eɪ /, US: / m æ ˈ n eɪ, m ə ˈ-/; [1] [2] French: [edwaʁ manɛ]; 23 January 1832 – 30 April 1883) was a French modernist painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, as well as a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.

Olympia is an 1863 oil painting by Édouard Manet, depicting a nude white woman ("Olympia") lying on a bed being attended to by a black maid.The French government acquired the painting in 1890 after a public subscription organized by Claude Monet.
The bunch of asparagus lies on a base of green leaves that reach from the left side to the lower right corner of the picture. Manet's biographer Théodore Duret speaks of a "lit d'herbes vertes" (bed of green leaves). [3] For the art historian Mikael Wivel, Manet presented the asparagus in the same way a greengrocer would display his goods. [4]
