A Volvo Penta TAMD120 diesel engine, built 1970-1983 Volvo Penta 6-cylinder diesel engine sound. Volvo Penta is a Swedish marine and industrial engine manufacturer, a joint stock company within the Volvo Group. Volvo Penta evolved from a foundry in Skövde 1907, when the first marine engine, the B1, was manufactured. The name Penta was created ...
When Volvo started in 1927, they ordered their engines from the engine manufacturer Penta in Skövde. The first engine was the inline four-cylinder side valve 28 hp (21 kW) Type DA. In 1931, Volvo acquired a majority of the Penta stock, and in 1935, Penta became a subsidiary of Volvo.
This has led to a campaign by the California EPA against the "3,000-mile myth", promoting vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for oil change intervals over those of the oil change industry. The engine user can, in replacing the oil, adjust the viscosity for the ambient temperature change, thicker for summer heat and thinner for the winter cold.
Aside from the increased bore size, the engine is identical to the B21. Volvo used a slightly different mold for the turbo engines to cast a boss for the turbo oil return line. Because a turbocharged engine has a higher operating temperature they used sodium filled exhaust valves and a thermostat controlled oil cooler (air/oil model).
The B36 was discontinued in 1973, although it was no longer used in trucks after 1966. It was the last petrol truck engine built by Volvo and the only V8 engine used in any vehicle, except for the newer Yamaha-built units used in the Volvo XC90 and S80. A marine version, the Volvo Penta AQ180, was available, featuring 180 hp with twin carburetors.
