Appalachian State University (/ ˌ æ p ə ˈ l æ tʃ ən / [a]), or App State, is a public university in Boone, North Carolina. It was founded as a teachers' college in 1899 by brothers B. B. and D. D. Dougherty and the latter's wife, Lillie Shull Dougherty.
The plant has long been closed. Boone Creek, the main creek that runs through Boone and the Appalachian State University campus is still nicknamed Kraut Creek since it is said that the creek used to smell of sauerkraut juice coming out of the plant. The Watauga County Farmers' Market has been operating in Boone since 1974.

Varsity Gymnasium is an 8,000 seat multi-purpose arena in Boone, North Carolina. It opened in 1968 and was home to the Appalachian State Mountaineers basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, until the Holmes Center opened in 2000. The gym is still currently home to the wrestling program.
