Okinawa City (沖縄市, Okinawa-shi, Japanese:) is the second-largest city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, following Naha, the capital city. [1] It is located in the central part of the island of Okinawa , about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of Naha.
Naha is located on the East China Sea coast of the southern part of Okinawa Island, the largest of Okinawa Prefecture. The modern city was officially founded on May 20, 1921. Before that, Naha had been for centuries one of the most important and populous sites in Okinawa. Naha is the political, economic and educational center of Okinawa Prefecture.
In that division, of the four main islands of Japan, Hokkaidō, Shikoku, and Kyūshū make up one region each, the latter also containing the Satsunan Islands, while the largest island Honshū is divided into five regions.
