New York Avenue is a diagonal avenue radiating northeast from the White House in Washington, D.C. to the border with Maryland.It is a major east–west route in the city's Northwest and Northeast quadrants and connects downtown with points east and north of the city via Cheverly, Maryland, the John Hanson Highway, the Baltimore–Washington Parkway, and eventually, Interstate 95.
It was built beginning in 1930, to house the expanded offices of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Construction was completed on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Administration Building to the north of Independence Avenue in 1930, but Depression-era agriculture programs demanded far more office space than the main building could provide.
The old route then continued on Maryland Avenue and turned south on 1st Street, where it then turns left into the U.S. Capitol grounds. US 1 went around the Capitol, making its way to Pennsylvania Avenue. The route continues on Pennsylvania Avenue to 14th Street where it turns south. US 1 then left Washington DC on 14th Street as it does today.
It is 446 acres (1.80 km 2) in size and is located 2.2 miles (3.5 km) northeast of the Capitol building, with entrances on New York Avenue, NE and R Street, NE. The campus's gardens, collections, and features are connected by roadways that are 9.5 miles (15.3 km) long in total. [2]
The route continues northeast on New York Avenue through Northeast Washington, passing the United States National Arboretum. US 1 Alternate is concurrent with US 50 along New York Avenue between 6th Street NW and Bladensburg Road.
