In Christianity, the Great Commission is the instruction of the resurrected Jesus Christ to his disciples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world. The Great Commission is outlined in Matthew 28:16–20, where on a mountain in Galilee Jesus calls on his followers to make disciples of and baptize all nations in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The disciples are now back in Galilee, obeying Jesus' instructions at Matthew 26:32, and to the women at 28:7 and 28:10. There is no mention of the women delivering their message, but the presence of the disciples in Galilee implies that they did so successfully. [2]
This is described in Mark 16 verses 19 and 20, [1] and Matthew 28 verses 19 and 20. [2] According to a tradition mentioned by Eusebius, they dispersed to distinct parts of the world. In the Middle Ages a liturgical feast of the Dispersion of the Apostles was celebrated to commemorate their missionary work and their founding the apostolic sees.
Cornelius a Lapide notes that the first precept of Christ is to only go to the Jews, and not the Gentiles or Samaritans. [2] Saint Jerome and Robert Witham both state that this restriction does not contradict the verse in Matthew 28:19, "Go, teach all nations", since this was said to them after the resurrection.
