Jay Peak is a mountain located about 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the Canada–US border, in Jay and Westfield, Orleans County, Vermont, of which it is the highest point. Most of the mountain is in Jay State Forest. The mountain is named for the town of Jay, Vermont, in which much of the mountain except the peak area itself is located.
Jay is named for John Jay, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. [4] The US Census Bureau estimated that the town's population had increased by 13.1% between 2000 and 2005, the seventh largest increase in the state. [5] Jay is also home to the Jay Challenge, a three-part stage-race, typically held in July.
The forest is managed by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation. The forest is divided into two tracts, Black Falls (3,764 acres (15.23 km 2)) and Big Jay (1,573 acres (6.37 km 2)), which features Jay Peak and Jay Peak Resort. Activities include hiking on the Long Trail and skiing at Jay Peak Resort. [2] [3]

Big Jay is flanked to the south by Little Jay (3,182 ft or 970 m), and to the northeast by Jay Peak (3,865 ft or 1,178 m), the highest summit of the Jay Peak complex. Jay Peak is named for John Jay (1745–1829) of New York, one of the founding fathers of the United States.
