It is the third-busiest airport in Greenland, and one of the busiest for international travel in Greenland. [2] The airport is located north-east of Ilulissat, just 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi) of city centre. It was built in 1983, [3] replacing the heliport. [3] The airport is the main hub out of three used by Air Greenland.
In the early 1960s, Greenlandair was founded, commencing civilian flights between the air bases, and helicopter and sea plane flights to large settlements. SAS operated the connection from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, beginning in 1954 as a fuel stop en route to United States, which was later taken over in 2000 by Air Greenland.
Those flights have typically been operated by Air Greenland or airlines from Germany. [6] Other charter flights have also been operated, for example a number of flights from the US and Canada landed in connection with the 2016 Arctic Winter Games in Nuuk [citation needed] and a flight to Canada in connection with the 2023 Arctic Winter Games. [7]
Other airlines operate seasonal and charter flights, Icelandair flies from Keflavík-Reykjavík to Nuuk, Kulusuk, Ilulissat and Narsarsuaq. Air Greenland has also operated a route from Iqaluit in Canada to Nuuk during summer during some years. Air cargo is very important for Greenland. Most perishable foodstuff is imported from Denmark by air.
