The size of the mile and acre are derived from the length of the surveyor's rod, a unit which in Ireland was called a perch (or linear perch to distinguish it from the square perch). A mile is 320 linear perches and an acre is 160 square perches.
The rod, perch, or pole (sometimes also lug) is a surveyor's tool [1] and unit of length of various historical definitions. In British imperial and US customary units, it is defined as 16 + 1 ⁄ 2 feet, equal to exactly 1 ⁄ 320 of a mile, or 5 + 1 ⁄ 2 yards (a quarter of a surveyor's chain), and is exactly 5.0292 meters.
The basic unit of area was the tir-cumaile, "land of three cows", as it was an area of land that was at some point worth three cows.It is sometimes erroneously interpreted as the area needed to graze three cows, but it is far too large for that; in modern Ireland, a cow grazes on about 0.4 ha, so twenty or more could graze a tir-cumaile.
The surveying perch measured 22 French feet. In French North America, it was also equal to 25 square perches, but the royal perch of 18 feet was used, yielding a vergée of 8100 square feet (854.7 m 2) In Guernsey, a vergée (Guernésiais: vergie) is 17,640 square feet (1,639 m 2). It is 40 (square) Guernsey perches.
Rood is an English unit of area equal to one quarter of an acre [2] or 10,890 square feet, exactly 1,011.7141056 m 2. A rectangle that is one furlong (i.e., 10 chains , or 40 rods) in length and one rod in width is one rood in area, as is any space comprising 40 perches (a perch being one square rod).
One acre equals 1 ⁄ 640 (0.0015625) square mile, 4,840 square yards, 43,560 square feet, [2] or about 4,047 square metres (0.4047 hectares) (see below). While all modern variants of the acre contain 4,840 square yards, there are alternative definitions of a yard, so the exact size of an acre depends upon the particular yard on which it is based.
Not yet declared are the catch limits for yellow perch that go into effect May 1. Currently, the daily limit is 30 west of Huron and east of Fairport Harbor but only 10 in between.
