Washington has four major professional sports teams and several other professional and semi-professional sports teams. All four are based in Seattle, the state's largest city, while most other minor league teams are based in the Seattle or Spokane metropolitan areas.
During the season each academy team expects to play between 25 and 30 games. These games are typically within the clubs' respective divisions, with the exception of showcase and playoff games. The U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams participate in Summer and Winter Showcases. The Summer Showcase also acts as the group stage of Academy Playoffs.
The program consists of teams at four age levels: [1] the under-23 and under-20 teams, as well as the Academy (U-17, U-16, and U-15). The D.C. United Academy has been one of the most successful MLS academies. [2] Many players have been signed directly from the Academy to the professional team, or have later played professionally.
