The Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University was ranked 20 among law schools in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. [4] It was ranked 10 by Outlook India ' s "Top 13 Government Law Institutes In India" of 2022 [6] and eighth among law colleges by India Today.

The Banaras Law Journal is a legal journal published by the Banaras Hindu University Press on behalf of Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University. It was established in 1965, when no other Indian university was publishing such a journal.
It was founded in 1898 by Annie Besant and became the main centre and the core of the Banaras Hindu University in 1916 founded by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. The Faculty of Arts is often called the mother faculty of the University, many other faculties and departments of the university grew around it. [ 2 ]
The college was part of the Department of Arts, Commerce and Law College from the beginning, but was reconstructed as a separate college of law on 14 April 1989. The college was renamed as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College of Law to honour Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on 10 May 1991.
The university is governed by the rules set by the Central Universities Act, 2009. [8] The president of India is the visitor of the university. The chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university while the executive powers rest with the vice-chancellor.
