The Capital Journal is a newspaper in Pierre, South Dakota, founded in 1881. It serves the South Dakota capital city of Pierre and the surrounding region, including Fort Pierre . As of December 2012, it reported a daily circulation of 10,750, with new issues published Monday through Friday (except Christmas Day and New Year's Day ).
The Huron Plainsman started as the Daily Huronite on January 3, 1886. It ran with four to six pages per edition. Being locally owned for almost 100 years, the owners sold the paper to Freedom Newspapers in 1980, which ran it for the next ten years, when they sold to the Omaha World-Herald in 1990.
Soon after, the Ordway Tribune, which had a power press, was moved to Aberdeen and combined with the News to produce a daily. In 1920, a competitor, the Aberdeen American, bought the News, and both were later purchased by the Aberdeen Journal. The Ridder family purchased the papers in 1928. The newspaper became The American News in 2004.
