The college began in 1971, [5] when the Nebraska State Legislature consolidated eight technical community college areas into six for about 2000 employees. Metropolitan Technical Community College's first campus, a former warehouse at 132nd and I streets, offered 46 programs and had a total student population of 1,059.
The college opened as a public normal school in 1910 after the state purchased the private Nebraska Normal College (established 1891). The State Normal College became State Normal School and Teacher's College in 1921. This was changed to Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne in 1949 and the present name was adopted in 1963. [3]

Many campus activities are arranged and funded by the student-run Campus Activities Board, or CAB as it is known by Peru State College students.
