Okazuya (御菜屋 or おかずや) or okazu-ya are a Japanese-style delicatessen common in Hawaii. Unlike western delicatessens found in North America or Europe, an okazuya is an establishment that sells readymade Japanese-styled food.
The bakery was founded in about 1935 by the brothers Shigeo and Fred Kanemitsu and is still owned and operated by George S. Kanemitsu, the son of Shigeo. It was originally located in Manila Camp, a half-mile to the west, but relocated to its present location in Kaunakakai town in 1945.
[2] [3] In 1977, the company expanded to the mainland United States by opening a bakery, King's Hawaiian Bakery, in Torrance, California. [3] By the 1980s, Taira's company, King's Hawaiian Bakery, was grossing US$20 million annually. [4] In 1988 the company moved its headquarters to the mainland. [2] The Honolulu bakery closed in 1992.
