Emil R. Buchser High School was a comprehensive, coeducational public high school in Santa Clara, California, United States that served students in grades nine through twelve. [ 2 ] [ 9 ] It opened to freshmen and sophomores in 1957, [ 2 ] with its first class graduating in 1960. [ 10 ]
Santa Clara High School was established in 1872 on the same property as the Santa Clara Grammar School, eventually moving to its own location in 1906. [18] [13] [19] [20] By 1966, the district included Santa Clara High School, Emil R. Buchser High School, Adrian C. Wilcox High School, and Marian A. Peterson High School. [2] [21]
In 1981, rival Buchser High School closed, and Santa Clara High School moved to its campus. [5] [6] [a] Because of the influx of former Buchser students into the Santa Clara student body, the school changed its mascot, logo, and yearbook name. [5] [7] Santa Clara High shares a longstanding rivalry with crosstown Wilcox High School.
[3] [13] [22] Much of the student body, as well as most of the administrative staff, was pulled from Emil R. Buchser High School. [ 30 ] [ 31 ] [ c ] The first graduating class was the Class of 1964, and the first class to attend Wilcox for all four years was the Class of 1965.
